TRAIL HIGHLIGHTS
ART TRAIL
Eight artists took inspiration from the theme of connections, each responding differently, exploring such things as connection to country, the local environment, and the history of the trail
CHEVIOT TUNNEL
Located midway between Yea and Molesworth, the Cheviot Tunnel is the longest rail trail tunnel in Victoria. The 210 meter tunnel is an ideal spot to take break and explore!
TRAWOOL VALLEY
Don't miss the stunning scenery of the Trawool Valley. Rolling hills, green fields and the Goulburn River flowing along the valley floor makes this part of the Great Victorian Rail Trail a must.
A TRAIL FOR EVERYONE

New artwork feature: `Soul Train` by @louise_paramor, located between Cathkin and Yarck in @discoverdindi.
Soul Train is suggestive of the engine car of a steam train and hints at the growth of industry and agriculture. The original model for the sculpture is a playful combination of colour and form. It was made up of everyday objects such as wooden building blocks, parts from children’s games, a toothbrush holder and a sauce bottle lid. Soul Train is designed to celebrate the rail history of the area in the form of a surprising and colourful ‘folly’.

We may have hit the cold days of winter once more, but that doesn`t stop us from riding our favourite parts of the Great Victorian Rail Trail. It`s a great way to warm up.
We recommend the 9km easy uphill ride from Yea Station to Cheviot Tunnel, with a fun downhill roll back into Yea.
Who else loves to ride, walk or run the Great Victorian Rail Trail during winter?

New artwork feature: `Responding` by @robbie_rowlands located in @visitmansfieldmtbuller.
Responding is a thought-provoking 39m artwork resembling a mobile phone tower that gracefully arches over the Great Victorian Rail Trail.
In their usual display, phone towers sit at heights well above the landscape or our built environments. Here, the tower appears animated, falling close to the ground as if bowing to meet us. In this way, the technological function of transmission – of receiving and responding to signals – becomes a personal interaction between the viewer, the artwork and the landscape.
This new artwork was created by Melbourne-based artist Robbie Rowlands. Through his practice, he explores everyday environments and materials to create immersive sculptural and media-based outcomes. With a focus on working specifically with each site and community, his outcomes seek to develop unique awareness and connections to subjects that are often overlooked.

New artwork feature: Mirnong (Yam Daisy) by Christabel Wigley, located near Yea.
For thousands of years, Taungurung women used cool fire and aeration of the soil to grow mirnong (Yam Daisy - Microseris Lanceolata) in this region. The appearance of bright yellow flowers in the spring was a sign that the tubers were ready to harvest.
Each plant had three tubers, the grandmother, the daughter and the granddaughter. The mother was taken to eat while the grandmother was left to nourish the growth of the granddaughter for the following harvest.
The artist imagined the trio of structures acting as carriers for lost stories, knowledge and shared languages. While inhabiting the rich bodily experience the viewer is guided through a telescopic gaze to focus on the hill-slopes, grasslands and cloud movements.
The artist acknowledges Taungurung cultural adviser and collaborator Sammy Trist for sharing the Kulin women’s story of the Mirnong. The use and collection of Yellow ochre on Taungurung Country approved by Taungurung Elders, Aunty Bernadette Franklin and Uncle Larry Walsh.
